When a Toronto car is ready for scrap

Cars in the core wear out differently from suburban ones. Short trips in stop-and-go traffic are hard on engines and brakes. Salt from winter streets eats into rocker panels and brake lines. And a car that only comes out once a month can sit long enough for the battery, tires and seals to give up.

You'll usually know it's time when the repair estimate is higher than the car's value, or when it fails its safety and you don't plan to fix it. That's the point where scrap car removal in Toronto makes sense. The car still has value as metal and parts, even if it never runs again, and selling it beats paying for another month of parking.

What scrap cars are worth in Toronto

Most end-of-life cars we tow in Toronto are worth $300 to $2,000, with scrap sedans starting at $300 and SUVs, vans and pickups at $500. The final number comes down to how much metal the car holds and which parts can be reused.

What sets the price

Curb weight
Scrap is sold by weight, so a full-size SUV is worth more than a subcompact.
Catalytic converter
It contains precious metals, so an intact one adds real money.
Engine and transmission
If either still works, it can be resold, which lifts the price.
Aluminum wheels and parts
Aluminum is worth more per kilogram than steel.
Missing pieces
A car without its engine or converter is worth less, though still worth towing.
Monthly metal markets
Scrap steel prices rise and fall, and our quotes follow them.
Payout ticket Top Cash 4 Cars
Sedan, coupe or hatchback
from $300
SUV or minivan
from $500
Pickup truck
from $500
Running used car
up to $10,000

Prices depend on current scrap metal rates and can change from one month to the next.

How to get the most for your car

  • Don't sell the battery or wheels separately before calling; it usually lowers the total.
  • Tell us if the car still runs, even badly, since it may be worth more than scrap.
  • Ask for a separate quote on each car if you have two to clear out.

How our scrap car removal works in Toronto

Three steps, one short visit, and the car is off your property.

  1. Step 1: Describe the car

Call (289) 349-2006 or use the form. We'll ask about the year, make and model, what's missing, whether it runs and exactly where it's parked. That last part matters downtown. You'll get a scrap price in about 3 minutes.

  2. Step 2: Pick a pickup slot

Choose a day and time. In most cases we can come the same day if you call before noon. If the car is in a building garage, let the property manager know a tow truck is booked so the driver isn't stuck at the gate.

  3. Step 3: Sign, get paid, wave goodbye

The driver confirms the car, you sign the bill of sale and hand over the ownership, and you're paid in cash. The car goes onto the truck and heads to a licensed recycler, and the spot is yours again.

What the recycler does with your car

Your car doesn't end up in a field. At a licensed Ontario recycler, it's taken apart in a set order:

  1. Fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid and refrigerant are drained and stored for proper handling.
  2. The battery, tires and catalytic converter come off and go to their own recycling streams.
  3. Parts that still work, such as alternators, mirrors and engines, are cleaned up and resold.
  4. The stripped body goes to a shredder, which separates the steel, aluminum and copper.

Around 75–80% of a typical car by weight can be recycled this way. For you, it means the car is gone for good and can't come back to cause problems later. Our auto recycling page covers the process in more detail.

Getting your car ready for scrap removal in Toronto

Paperwork to have on hand

Have the ownership (vehicle permit) and a government photo ID ready. If the car belonged to someone else, such as a parent, call us first so we can tell you what's needed. You don't need a safety certificate to scrap a car in Ontario.

Take off your plates

Remove your licence plates before we tow. Ontario plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle, which means you can move them to your next car or drop them off at ServiceOntario. Returned plates don't come with a refund. See our licence plate guide for the details.

Clear out your belongings

Check the glovebox, trunk, door pockets and under the seats. Parking passes, garage remotes and 407 transponders get left behind all the time. Once the car reaches the recycler, we can't promise that anything left inside will be found.

Cancel the insurance after the sale

Once the car is gone, call your insurer to cancel or move your policy. Keep your copy of the bill of sale in case anyone asks when the car changed hands.

Sort out access

Downtown, access is half the job. Book a visitor spot or tell the concierge, and check the garage height if you can. For laneway garages, move bins and bikes out of the way. Our pickup prep guide has a full checklist.

Reaching your street

Scrap car removal Toronto: common questions

Still have a question? Call (289) 349-2006 and ask a real person.

Is my car worth more as scrap or as a used car?

If it runs and would pass, or nearly pass, a safety, it's usually worth more as a used car. If the repairs cost more than the car, scrap value is likely the better deal. Tell us the condition and we'll price it whichever way pays you more.

Do I need to drain the gas or fluids first?

No. Leave everything in the car. The recycler drains every fluid in a controlled setting, which is safer than doing it yourself in a laneway or condo garage. If the car is actively leaking, mention it when you book.

Can you scrap a car that hasn't moved in years?

Yes. Cars that have sat in a Toronto garage or backyard for years are common. Flat tires, seized brakes and a dead battery don't stop us, because the driver can winch the car onto the truck or use wheel dollies.

Should I sell the tires or battery before scrapping?

Usually not. Taking parts off before pickup lowers our offer, often by more than you'd get selling them yourself. It also leaves you with old parts to get rid of. Leave the car complete and let us price it as is.

How long does the pickup take?

About 20–30 minutes once the driver arrives. Pickups from deep underground parking or tight laneways can take a little longer, but the paperwork itself only takes a few minutes.

Do you scrap cars in Leaside and East York?

Yes. Leaside, Thorncliffe Park and the rest of East York are covered, and the tow is free. The Don Valley Parkway makes these some of our quicker pickups on the east side of the city.

Will I get anything in writing?

Yes. You sign a bill of sale with the driver and keep a copy. It shows the date the car changed hands, which is useful when you cancel your insurance or deal with the plates.

Do heavier vehicles like minivans get more?

Yes. Scrap value is tied to weight, so minivans, SUVs and pickups start at $500 while smaller sedans start at $300. A big family van that has done its last school run in East York or the Annex often brings more than people expect.

What if my car has a lien on it?

A lien must be paid off or disclosed before we can buy the car. Call us and we'll talk through your options. Our page on how liens affect a sale explains how it usually works.
