Why sell my car to a cash buyer?

When you decide "I need to sell my car," you usually want three things: a fair price, a quick sale and as little disruption as possible. A private listing can get you top dollar for the right car, but it also brings lowball messages, no-shows and test drives with strangers. A dealer is faster, yet the trade-in number often feels thin.

We sit in between. We buy running used cars at used-car prices, not scrap prices, and we come to you anywhere in the GTA and Golden Horseshoe, whether that means selling your car in Toronto or selling your car in Mississauga. You get one firm number, one short visit and cash in your hand.

Good reasons to sell your car for cash

People come to us at every stage of a car's life. If one of these sounds like you, a direct sale is probably the quickest way to sell your car and move on.

  • The high-mileage commuter

Years of highway driving put big kilometres on the odometer. Dealers tend to shrug at those cars, but a well-kept high-mileage car still has real value to us, and we price it that way.

  • The car that failed safety

A failed safety means repairs before a private buyer can plate it. We buy cars as-is, so the brake job, rust repair or suspension work becomes our problem, not yours.

  • The trade-in that came in low

If the dealer's trade-in number felt thin, get a second opinion before you sign. You can take our cash offer and put it toward your next car, wherever you end up buying it.

  • The second car nobody drives

The kids moved out, you switched to transit or you work from home now. An idle car still costs insurance and parking, and it loses value every month it sits.

  • Moving, downsizing or relocating

A condo with one parking spot, a move overseas, a new job in another province. We work to your timeline, and same-day pickup is usually possible if you call before noon.

  • Simply done with it

Sometimes there's no big reason. You're tired of repair bills, ready for something different, or you'd rather not have strangers test-driving your car. That's reason enough to call.

What's my used car worth?

Running used cars in good shape can bring up to $10,000, while older cars that still run typically sit at or above the $300 to $2,000 range we pay for scrap and junk vehicles. Six things decide where your car falls:

What sets the price

Year and model
Newer cars and models with a reputation for reliability are worth more, and some models hold their value far better than others.
Kilometres
Low mileage for the car's age raises the offer, while very high mileage lowers it but doesn't rule the car out.
Mechanical health
Warning lights, a slipping transmission, leaks and odd noises all cost money to fix, so they come off the price.
Body, rust and history
Dents, rust bubbles and past collision repairs lower resale value, and a branded history matters most of all.
Trim, options and tires
Higher trims, all-wheel drive and good tires, including a spare set of winter tires, add to what we can pay.
Market demand
Used-car prices rise and fall with the market, so a model that's in demand right now earns a stronger offer.
Payout ticket Top Cash 4 Cars
Sedan, coupe or hatchback
from $300
SUV or minivan
from $500
Pickup truck
from $500
Running used car
up to $10,000

Used-car offers follow current market demand, and scrap values depend on current scrap metal rates. Both change month to month.

How to get the most for your car

  • Mention recent work like new brakes, tires or a battery.
  • Include winter tires and rims if they're going with the car.
  • Have service records handy if you kept them.
  • Be upfront about warning lights or leaks so the offer stays firm.
  • Hand over every key and fob you have.

Private sale, dealer trade-in or cash buyer?

Here's how selling to us compares with listing the car yourself, trading it in or hauling it to a scrapyard. Our comparison of scrapping, selling and trading in digs into the numbers.

Feature Top Cash 4 Cars Private sale (Kijiji / Marketplace) Dealer trade-in Driving it to a scrapyard
Free towing Yes, always No Rarely You get it there
Buys non-running cars Yes Rarely Almost never Yes
Paid on the spot Yes, cash Depends on the buyer Credit toward a new car Yes
Time to sell Same day in most areas Weeks 1–3 days Your schedule
Paperwork handled Yes You do it Yes Partly
Beat-any-offer guarantee Yes No No No
Risk of no-shows or scams None High Low None

A private sale can bring the most money for a clean, popular car, and a trade-in can lower the HST on your next purchase. For speed and certainty, selling to us usually comes out ahead, especially for older or imperfect cars.

What it takes to sell a used car in Ontario privately

Selling privately isn't hard, but it's more work than most people expect. Here's what's involved, so you can compare it fairly with a cash sale.

The Used Vehicle Information Package

Ontario requires private sellers to give the buyer a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP), which you get from ServiceOntario. It lists the car's registration history and other details a buyer needs. When you sell to us, you skip that step, and we'll tell you exactly which documents we need instead.

Safety certificates and as-is sales

A private buyer usually needs a safety standards certificate before they can plate the car. You can sell as-is, but plenty of buyers walk away from a car without one. We buy cars with or without a safety, including ones that just failed their inspection.

Strangers, test drives and no-shows

A listing brings messages at all hours, buyers who never turn up and test drives with people you've never met. Meeting in a busy public place helps, but the whole process can eat several evenings and weekends before the right buyer appears.

Getting paid safely

Private sales come with payment risk: counterfeit bank drafts, overpayment scams and buyers who want to pay later. Selling to us removes that worry, because you're paid in cash on the spot before the car leaves your driveway, and there's nothing to deposit or wait on.

When a trade-in is the better call

If you're buying from a dealer, trading in can lower the HST on your new car, because in Ontario the tax is generally charged on the price after the trade-in. Compare that saving with our cash offer before you decide. Sometimes the trade-in really is the better deal.

How to sell my car fast in 3 steps

Here's the whole process, from first call to cash in hand.

  1. Step 1: Get your number

Call (289) 349-2006 or fill in the form with the year, make, model, trim, kilometres and condition. Mention recent work like new brakes or tires. You'll have a firm offer in about 3 minutes, and you're under no obligation to accept it.

  2. Step 2: Choose your day

Pick a time that suits you, Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Call before noon and we can usually come the same day. We'll meet you at home, at work or wherever the car is parked, as long as you can be there to sign.

  3. Step 3: Sign, get paid, hand over the keys

The driver confirms the car matches your description and checks your ownership (vehicle permit) and photo ID. You sign the bill of sale, get paid in cash on the spot, and we take the car away the same visit.

What to bring, and what to take out of the car

A few minutes of prep keeps pickup quick. For the complete list, see our paperwork checklist for selling a car in Ontario.

  • Your ownership You'll sign the vehicle portion over to us and keep the plate portion for your records.
  • Photo ID Bring a valid government photo ID that matches the name on the ownership.
  • Every key and fob Spare keys and remote fobs add value, so hand over all of them.
  • Lien payout details If you still owe money on the car, get a payout statement from your lender and call us before booking.
  • Service records They're optional, but receipts and records help show the car was looked after.
  • Licence plates Take them off before the car leaves; in Ontario plates belong to you, so keep them for your next car or return them to ServiceOntario.
  • 407 ETR transponder and garage opener Pull the transponder off the windshield and the opener off the visor.
  • Personal belongings Check the glovebox, door pockets, trunk, under the seats and the spare-tire well.
  • Your insurance After the sale, call your insurer to cancel the policy or move it to your next vehicle.

What sellers say about us

Reviews from people who sold their car to us.

  • “Excellent service! Philip did a really good job of keeping his promised time to do the pick-up of my 2008 Honda Accord and paid whatever was agreed upon. Highly recommended scrap car removal service in Mississauga. Fast pickup and cash on the spot. No hassles and very pleasant experience.”
Merben Figura Mississauga via Customer review
  • “I called after work around 7 p.m. I had a car I needed to get rid of and 30 minutes after I made the first call, he showed up and gave me a very fair deal on the car. Car was gone, money in my wallet and I was very happy. He was extremely pleasant, polite, fair and explained things to me the right way.”

Sell my car: common questions

Still have a question? Call (289) 349-2006 and ask a real person.

How fast can I sell my car?

Often the same day. You'll get a quote in about 3 minutes, and if you call before noon we can usually pick up that afternoon or evening. The visit itself takes about 20–30 minutes, and you're paid before we leave.

Will you pay more than a dealer trade-in?

It depends on the car. Dealers tend to offer less for older, high-mileage or imperfect cars, because many of those end up at auction. A trade-in can also lower the HST on your next purchase, so compare both numbers fairly. If you have a written offer, show us: we’ll beat any written offer.

Do you buy cars with high mileage?

Yes. Mileage affects the offer, but it doesn't disqualify a car. A well-maintained car with big kilometres from highway driving can still be worth well above scrap. Tell us the exact odometer reading and any recent work so we can price it properly.

Can I sell my car if it failed the safety?

Yes. You don't need a safety certificate to sell your car to us. Tell us what failed, such as brakes, tires, rust or suspension, and we'll factor it into the offer. That way you're not paying for repairs on a car you're about to sell.

Do you buy financed or leased cars?

Sometimes. If the car is financed, the loan must be paid off or disclosed before the sale, so call us with your lender's payout amount. A leased car belongs to the leasing company, so you'd usually need to buy out the lease first. See selling a car with a lien.

My car has been in an accident before. Will you still buy it?

Yes. A past collision lowers resale value, and how much depends on the repair quality and whether the car carries a brand. Tell us about it up front. For fresh or heavy damage, our damaged car buyers page explains how we price it.

Can I sell my car without the ownership?

You'll need it, but a lost ownership doesn't end the sale. ServiceOntario can issue a replacement, and our guide to selling a car without ownership walks through your options. Call us first so we can tell you exactly what's required.

Should I clean or fix the car before selling?

No. Don't spend money on repairs or detailing first. Repairs rarely pay for themselves on a car you're about to sell, and a wash won't change our offer much. Just take out your personal things and your plates.

Can you pick up from my work or a parking lot?

Yes, as long as you, or someone authorized to sell the car, can meet the driver and the lot allows it. We pick up from homes, workplaces, condo garages and commuter lots. Mention any gate codes or height limits when you book.

Do you buy cars that run but need repairs?

Yes. A check engine light, worn brakes, a slipping transmission or weak air conditioning are all fine. We price the car as it sits today. If repairs would cost more than the car is worth, we may value it closer to scrap, and we'll tell you why.

Ready to sell your car?

Get a firm offer in about 3 minutes and cash on the spot, often the same day you call. If another buyer puts a higher number in writing, we’ll beat any written offer.

Open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
