Dead cars and tight spots: junk car removal in Cambridge

Cambridge grew out of three 19th-century mill towns, and a lot of its housing is older. That means narrow driveways, detached garages at the back of the lot and laneways that were never planned with a tow truck in mind. It also means plenty of cars tucked away in places that are hard to reach once they stop running.

Picture a sedan that died halfway up a West Galt driveway, a project car that never got finished in a Hespeler Village garage, or a pickup left in a field outside Ayr. If you can walk to the car, we can almost always get it out. Tell us the situation and we'll plan the right truck and the right approach.

How we get junk cars out of hard-to-reach places

Here's how we handle the spots that worry people most.

Steep Galt driveways

Driveways that drop toward the river valley can be tricky with a car that won't roll or steer. We set the truck at the top and winch the car up slowly and safely. Tell us the slope, and whether the car is facing uphill or down.

Back lanes and detached garages

Older parts of Preston and Hespeler have garages at the back of the lot, reached by a lane or a narrow side drive. We'll ask about the width when you book, and if a flatbed can't fit, we'll pull the car out to where it can load.

Industrial yards and shop lots

For business vehicles near the 401 or along Hespeler Road, let us know about gates, loading docks and site hours. Our driver checks in at the office before the truck goes in, so your day isn't interrupted.

Rural lanes and fields

Farm properties in North Dumfries and Puslinch can mean long gravel lanes or a car sitting in a pasture. Dry ground is easiest. During spring mud or after a big snowfall, we may suggest a different day so the truck doesn't sink.

No keys, flat tires or seized brakes

None of these stop a pickup. The winch does the work when the wheels won't turn, and missing keys just mean the car is pulled on rather than driven. Mention it when you call so the driver comes ready. More on our non-running car service.

Cambridge junk car situations we take care of

If one of these fits, give us a call. Chances are we've handled something just like it.

  • Died in the driveway Cars that stopped starting one morning and never got fixed.
  • Long-term storage Cars that have sat in a garage or carport for years.
  • Unfinished projects Restorations that stalled halfway, with parts still in boxes.
  • After an accident Cars that came home on a tow truck and never went back on the road.
  • Snowed in Cars buried by the plow at the end of the driveway.
  • Moving or downsizing A second car you can't take to a smaller home or condo.
  • Estate clean-outs A late parent's car that needs to go before the house is listed.
  • Farm and rural junk Old trucks and cars sitting in fields, barns or sheds outside the city.
  • Business clear-outs Dead work vans and trucks taking up space at a shop or yard.

Fix it or junk it? A quick gut check

Before you call, it helps to be honest about whether the car is worth saving. A few questions settle it for most people:

  • Would the repair bill be more than the car is worth once it's fixed?
  • Has it failed a safety on rust in the floor, frame or brake lines?
  • Has it been sitting so long that the tires, brakes and battery all need replacing too?
  • Are you putting off the repair because you don't really want the car anymore?

If you answered yes to two or more, it's probably time to let it go. A junk car is worth the most while it's still complete, before parts get borrowed or the rust spreads further. If the car still runs well, though, you may get more by selling it as a used car in Cambridge.

Four steps to an empty driveway

Here's what happens after you call.

  1. Step 1: Tell us what and where

Call (289) 349-2006 or use the form. Describe the car and where it's sitting, including any hills, lanes, gates or snow. You'll get a firm cash offer in about 3 minutes, with no obligation to go ahead.

  2. Step 2: Pick a time

Book a slot that works for you. Same-day pickup is usually possible if you call before noon; otherwise we'll set a time for the next day or later in the week, including evenings and Saturdays.

  3. Step 3: Paperwork and payment

When the truck arrives, the driver checks the car, you sign the ownership and you're paid in cash on the spot. Have your photo ID handy, and the keys if you still have them.

  4. Step 4: We haul it away

The driver winches or drives the car onto the truck and takes it to a licensed recycler. Take your plates off first, then cancel the insurance once the car is gone.

Help the driver find your car

Give us a landmark if your place is hard to spot. Cambridge Centre, Riverside Park in Preston and the old mill buildings along the Speed River in Hespeler are all easy reference points. For rural properties, a fire number and the nearest crossroad help a lot. In winter, mark the car's spot if the plow has buried it. For pickups south of the city, see car removal in Paris.

Junk car removal FAQs for Cambridge

Still have a question? Call (289) 349-2006 and ask a real person.

Can you remove a car that won't roll or steer?

Yes. Seized brakes, locked steering and flat tires are common with junk cars, and our drivers handle them with a winch. It just takes a bit longer, so tell us when you book and we'll plan for it.

Can you pick up from a garage at the back of a laneway?

Usually, yes. Many older Preston and Hespeler homes have garages off a lane. We'll ask how wide it is and whether there are tight turns. If a truck can't get in, the car can be pulled out to a spot where we can load it.

What if the junk car isn't registered to me?

We can only buy it from the registered owner or someone with the legal right to sell it, such as an estate trustee. If it was left by a tenant or a relative, they'll need to sign or give you the right papers. Call us and we'll explain.

How much will I get for a junk car in Cambridge?

Most junk cars bring $300 to $2,000, depending on weight, parts and metal prices. A complete car that hasn't moved in years is still worth at least $300 as a sedan or $500 as an SUV or minivan. Prices depend on current scrap metal rates.

Do you remove junk cars from rural properties near Cambridge?

Yes. We pick up across North Dumfries, Puslinch and the Glen Morris area, with free towing. Give us a fire number and directions. If the ground is soft, we may suggest a dry day so the truck doesn't get stuck.

Can I get rid of a junk car without the keys or the ownership?

No keys is fine. No ownership is harder, because we need proof the car is yours. ServiceOntario can replace a lost ownership, and we'll tell you exactly what to bring. Our guide to selling without ownership has more.

Can you tow a junk car from a townhouse complex?

Yes. Many newer Cambridge townhouse complexes have narrow private roads and visitor-parking rules, so check with your property manager first. Tell us the unit number and where the car is parked, and we'll load it quickly without blocking your neighbours for long.

Is there anything I need to do after the car is gone?

Just two things. Keep your licence plates, since they belong to you, not the car, and either use them on your next vehicle or return them to ServiceOntario. Then call your insurer to cancel the policy. That's it.
